<p>Chris Izworski, reporting from Michigan on the current state of the Salmon Trout River, has to start with the numbers because the numbers matter most when you&#8217;re thinking about driving four hours north into the Huron Mountains. The gauge is running at 12 cubic feet per second this morning, which sounds abstract until you compare it to what this river normally does on May 18th. The historical median for today is 6 cfs. We&#8217;re sitting at 184 percent of normal. That&#8217;s not a little bit high. That&#8217;s significantly blown out for a headwater brook trout stream.</p>
<p>This is the reality of spring in the Upper Peninsula. The snowpack in these northern watersheds releases slowly through April and into May, and even a small river like the Salmon Trout responds dramatically. You can have textbook hatch conditions on the calendar and unfish­able water on the ground because the hydrology doesn&#8217;t care about the Hendrickson emergence or the sulphur spinner fall. The USGS gauge is telling us the water is running muddy and dangerous to wade. The systematic conditions rating confirms what the numbers suggest: Fair, which in the context of 12 cfs on a tiny brook trout stream means fishable only if you know exactly where you&#8217;re going and you&#8217;re willing to work for it.</p>
<h2>Why Today Isn&#8217;t Your Day</h2>
<p>The water temperature is 48.4 degrees and the gauge height sits at 0.55 feet. What this means in practical terms is that the Salmon Trout has scoured beyond the point where a visiting angler can reasonably expect to find and fish the holding water. The standard dry fly approaches that work here when conditions settle won&#8217;t work in this soup. You could wet fly the heavy riffles and swing streamers through dark water, but you&#8217;d be working blind and fighting current you don&#8217;t want to be in.</p>
<p>More importantly, the remoteness of this fishery in the Big Bay area compounds the risk. This isn&#8217;t a roadside stream where you can make a quick decision to leave. Four-wheel drive access, limited parking, and the genuine isolation of the Huron Mountains mean your margin for error on a high-water day is thin. The water is cold enough that an awkward wade could be serious. You should feel good about not being there right now.</p>
<h2>Reading the Calendar for Better Water</h2>
<p>The good news is that late May brings more stable conditions to UP rivers. The heavy spring snowmelt window is closing. Within the next week or so, as air temperatures continue to warm and the remaining snow diminishes, the Salmon Trout should begin to settle toward something closer to normal flows. When that happens, this river becomes something special. The caddis activity is building now. Grannoms and early browns are active, and the sulphurs and blue-winged olives are ramping up. By late May and into early June, when the water moderates, you&#8217;ll have genuine dry fly fishing on a genuine wild brook trout stream.</p>
<p>The evening window will be worth your attention then. Sunset today is at 9:22 pm, and the golden hour for dry fly work runs from 7:52 pm through dark. That&#8217;s nearly an hour and a half of prime time. When the gauge drops back toward 6 to 9 cfs, which is where this river should be running in another week, the Hendrickson nymphs will be productive in the riffles during the afternoon. The afternoon emergence peaks between 2 and 4 pm, and you&#8217;ll see genuine rises in the flat water between current. Hendrickson Dries in size 12, Red Quills, and a good Hendrickson Nymph in 12 are the right calls.</p>
<p>The Elk Hair Caddis in brown size 14 has been the working fly on this river. Skitter it across the surface in the evening when the adults are moving. Swing the LaFontaine Sparkle Pupa through the riffles on the rise, and don&#8217;t sleep on the X-Caddis if the fish turn selective in the film. The blue-winged olives will be there too, long fluorocarbon tippet into the 5X and 6X range, Parachute or Sparkle Dun in 16.</p>
<h2>The Real Calculus</h2>
<p>You can fish the Salmon Trout today if you really want to. The regulations are general trout regs, and the fish are there. But this is a river that demands conditions, and conditions today are asking you to work much harder for much less. Better to watch the gauge, plan for the following week, and know that the drive into the Huron Mountains is worth making when the water temperature creeps another few degrees and the flow settles into that sweet window where wild native brook trout rise to dry flies in one of Michigan&#8217;s most remote and least­accessible fisheries. The reward for waiting is real.</p>

The Salmon Trout River: High Water and the Waiting Game

<p>Chris Izworski&#8217;s Michigan Trout Daily weekly overview for Sunday, May 17: here is what the gauges actually show across the state right now. This is a good week to be a Michigan trout angler. Most of the state is running near normal or slightly elevated, caddis and early sulphurs are building toward the peak of May, and water temperatures across both peninsulas remain comfortably cool. The challenge this week is not too much water or too little, but rather choosing between dozens of viable options, each with its own character and current conditions.</p>
<h2>Upper Peninsula: Cold Water and Variable Flows</h2>
<p>The Upper Peninsula is telling two different stories. The western UP rivers, particularly the Tahquamenon River at 147% of median and the Cisco Branch Ontonagon River at 135%, are running noticeably high and deserve respect with appropriate tactics and caution. The Salmon Trout River is also solid at 127% of median. These rivers are pushing more current than normal, which will concentrate trout in softer water and behind structure; they are worth fishing, but plan on drifts and nymphs over long dry fly runs.</p>
<p>The central and eastern UP tells a different story. The Black River in Schoolcraft County sits at a manageable 96% of median, the Brule River on the Wisconsin border is right at 100%, and the Sturgeon River near Nahma is at 110% of median. These are solid platforms for the week. However, the lower-end rivers show real constraint. The Black River in the UP proper is at only 43% of median, the Sturgeon River in the UP is at 48%, the Silver River is at 48%, and the Michigamme River is at 49%. These low flows make for excellent dry fly conditions if you have access, but trout will be concentrated and selective. Water temperatures across the UP range from a cold 46 degrees on the East Branch Salmon Trout River to 55 degrees on the Escanaba River, which means bug activity is building but not yet explosive.</p>
<h2>Northern Lower Peninsula: The Heart of May Fishing</h2>
<p>The Northern Lower Peninsula is where most Michigan trout anglers will find the most balanced conditions this week. The AuSable River is running at 115% of median, near normal and perfect for this time of year. The Manistee River sits at a solid 122% of median with water temperatures at 54 degrees, the coldest reporting in the NLP, which favors sustained bug activity. The Pere Marquette River is at 104% of median, exactly where you want it in mid-May. The Jordan River is at 117% of median, and the Pigeon River is at 122%. These are not blown-out conditions; they are workable, productive conditions during caddis and early sulphur season.</p>
<p>Three rivers in the NLP are running genuinely high and worth noting: the Clam River at 156% of median is the highest in the state outside of the Tahquamenon, the Thunder Bay River at 133% of median is elevated, and the Sturgeon River in the NLP is at 133% as well. Plan for high-water tactics on these three.</p>
<p>The lower-end concerns in the NLP are real but manageable. The Little Muskegon River is at 63% of median, the Looking Glass River is at 68%, the Maple River is at 63%, the Au Gres River is at 68%, the Red Cedar River is at 67%, and the Pigeon River in Ottawa County is at 65%. These are low flows, suitable for sight fishing and dry flies if conditions are right, but they are not the conditions you want if you prefer working deeper runs and drifts. The Muskegon River itself is at 81% of median, which is reasonable.</p>
<h2>Southern Lower Peninsula: Limited Gauge Data</h2>
<p>The Southern Lower Peninsula, home to excellent rivers like the Au Sable, Rifle, Boardman, and numerous spring creeks, has no gauged rivers reporting through the Michigan Trout Report network at this time. This does not mean the fishing is poor, only that anglers in that region will need to rely on local knowledge, contact with fly shops, or direct observation of water conditions. The general weather and regional conditions suggest that most southern Michigan trout streams are likely running near normal or slightly elevated given the pattern across the state, but you cannot confirm that without direct contact or local resources.</p>
<h2>Where I Would Go This Week</h2>
<p>If I had a single day to fish this week, I would drive to the Manistee River in the Northern Lower Peninsula. It is running at 122% of median, water temperature is at 54 degrees, and the river sits in the sweet spot between high and low. Caddis and sulphurs are building, and near-normal flows mean trout are feeding actively in traditional lies. If the Manistee feels crowded, the Pere Marquette River just downstream is at 104% of median and often receives less pressure; it is equally good right now.</p>
<p>If you prefer the UP and want to avoid the high flows on the Tahquamenon and Cisco Branch, the Salmon Trout River at 127% of median is still manageable and well worth the drive. It is cold, it is clean, and it is producing.</p>
